From Veterinarian to Pet Sitter: My Unexpected Journey into Southeast Asia

Hello fellow adventurers!

I’m excited to share with you the amazing journey that unfolded after I made a spontaneous decision in January 2020.

Before 2020 I was travelling around South America and dreaming of Asia

As a veterinarian based in Argentina, I was dealing with burnout and a longing to explore the world.

At that time, I was planning a trip to Japan. I would spend a month exploring Japan, then back to Argentina to resume work for a year, stacking up those savings.

On my first day in Japan, I was on cloud 9!

But you know how life likes to throw curveballs, right? Well, mine came in the form of a sudden decision – I decided to quit my job and embrace the unknown.

No return ticket to Argentina after Japan. Instead, I chose to dive headfirst into the wonders of Southeast Asia.

On the 3rd of January 2020, I said goodbye to Argentina!

It was January 17th, and my departure to Japan loomed in February.

Looking for ideas to travel in a budget-friendly way, I turned to social media, where I stumbled upon TrustedHousesitter, a platform that connects pet sitters with homeowners. Pet sitting is a good way to save money on accommodation!

Ergo TrustedHousesitter became my go-to platform, and armed with an annual membership, I crafted a profile that screamed, “I’m your ideal pet sitter!” Well, at least I hoped it did.

The wonders of Thailand were waiting for me, a click of distance.

So I decided to give it a shot and applied for houses in Southeast Asia.
Fast forward a few days, and my fate was sealed—I had applications out for houses in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Chiang Mai, Singapore, and Japan. The suspense was real!

To my surprise, Chiang Mai responded! The owners liked what they saw in my profile and wanted to chat.

A virtual interview later, I found myself entrusted with the care of two cats and, wait for it, two snakes!
At this point, I was ready to pet-sit a dinosaur if given the chance. If you know what I mean.

Chiang Mai became my first home in Thailand.

A few clicks later, I was booking a flight from Japan to Thailand, marking the beginning of a journey that would last four years and counting.

My last day working as a vet in Argentina.

Little did I know that the pandemic would shake things up, turning my world upside down in March 2020.

The flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai was the last one for me in 2020.

My experience in Thailand was nothing short of amazing.
Despite the pandemic, I was lucky enough to have landed in a country that became a haven for me.
I immersed myself in Thai culture, made lifelong friends, and even secured a job that allowed me to continue living my dream.

When the time to move on came in October 2022, I was filled with tears as I looked back at all the personal growth I had experienced during my time in Thailand.

You are welcome to check out my video anniversary!

Life is a wild ride, my friends! I owe it all to that first family that opened their home to me, trusted me with their pets, and completely changed the course of my life.
