Reflections After Four Years on The Road
In the dance of wanderlust, a never-ending cycle of arrivals and departures, I question the elusive concept of home.
Saying goodbye becomes an inevitable companion when you’re a nomad, a traveller living on the edge of perpetual motion, and the search for a place to belong can be an endless quest.
Some days, I wake up to a soft touch of nostalgia, a sense of transience, or chronic sadness.
However, amid this constant flux, a profound realization emerges: home is not a destination, but rather a state of being within us.
It’s a conscious decision to bring our sense of belonging with ourselves wherever we go.
Home is the golden glow of yesterday’s sunset, etched in memory.
It’s the connection made over coffee with a Chinese girl that leads to a day of shared experiences.
Home is the network of people who have helped us along the way as well as the hands that we have extended to those in need.
It’s the familiarity of a favourite spot where memories are transcribed onto pages, a sanctuary for our transient souls.
Home is the solace found on certain days, the tears shed while watching ducks and swans gracefully navigate the canal.
It’s the special playlist, that gets us through the monotony of a 16-hour bus ride.
Home is the paradoxical mix of excitement and fear at the airport, the constant battle with the fear of flying that refuses to go away.
For me, home echoes in the quiet countryside of the UK, in the vibrant streets of Argentina, and the serene landscapes of Thailand.
It isn’t confined to a single place; it is spread across the globe in fragments of belonging.
Home is the unexpected love encountered amidst the chaos of travel, a connection that transcends geographical boundaries.
It is the recognition that belonging can cross borders and cultural boundaries, combining a tapestry of diverse experiences into the fabric of our existence.
Yet, there are days when the blues set in, and the yearning for the unknown intensifies.
It’s during these moments, that the questioning begins: why do we continue to live this way?
Is it worth saying goodbye all the time and looking for a place to belong?
And, despite the uncertainties, the answer is unwavering: yes.
Embrace the journey as an opportunity for personal growth while navigating the inevitable pain.
Recognize the profound privilege of wandering freely and be grateful for the mosaic of experiences that life has provided.
We are, undoubtedly, fortunate. So, my fellow wanderers, embrace the uncertainty, cherish the connections, and may your travels be safe and transformative!
